Google Business Profile

The free listing that decides whether you appear in map results — and the handful of fields that actually matter.

Why it outranks your website

For a search with local intent, the map pack usually sits above the ordinary blue links. Those results do not come from your website. They come from Google Business Profile listings.

This is why a business with a mediocre website and a well-kept profile beats a beautiful website with no profile. It is also why claiming yours is the single highest-value hour in this course.

The fields that carry weight

Primary category is the most consequential single choice you will make: it tells Google what searches you are eligible for at all. Pick the most specific one that genuinely describes your main trade, not the broadest.

Then: service area or address, opening hours (including bank holidays), phone number, website link, services list, and photographs. Photographs of the real premises, real vans and real work — not stock images, which customers recognise instantly.

Keeping it alive

A profile is not a form you fill once. Answer the questions people post, keep hours accurate when they change, add photos occasionally, and respond to every review — including the bad ones, briefly and without arguing.

None of this guarantees a position. It makes you eligible, credible, and easy to choose.

In practice — A mobile dog groomer covering three Kent towns

She had no premises, so she assumed a map listing was not for her. In fact a service-area business is a supported type: you set the towns you cover and hide the home address.

Setting the primary category to "Pet groomer" rather than "Pet supply store", listing the three towns, and adding twelve real before-and-after photos made her eligible for searches she had never appeared in.

Action checklist

  • Claim and verify the profile — an unverified listing cannot be managed.
  • Set the most specific accurate primary category.
  • Set a service area if you travel to customers, or a precise address if they come to you.
  • Fill opening hours including special hours for bank holidays.
  • Add the services you offer, in the words customers use.
  • Upload at least ten genuine photographs.
  • Reply to every review, positive and negative.

Exercise

Open your profile on a phone as a customer would see it. Write down every question a first-time customer could not answer from that screen alone, then fill those gaps.
